B2 English Requirement for UK Work Visas

B2 English Requirement for UK Work Visas

From 8 January 2026, new main applicants on the Skilled Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual (HPI) routes must demonstrate English at CEFR Level B2 — broadly equivalent to A-level standard. That is a step up from the previous B1 requirement (broadly GCSE standard).

If you are planning a work visa application, or advising someone who is, this guide explains exactly what changed, who it affects, who is exempt, and an important point that causes a lot of confusion: it does not change the English requirement for spouse and family visas.

What changed and when

The English language threshold for the affected work routes increased from B1 to B2 on 8 January 2026. B2 demonstrates a higher level of fluency and is intended, in the government’s framing, to support better integration and workplace performance.

This change applies to main applicants on the affected routes. Dependants are not subject to the same B2 requirement under this change, although the government has signalled that dependant requirements could be reviewed in future.

Which routes are affected — and which are not

Affected (B2 from 8 January 2026):

Not affected by this particular change:

  • Spouse and partner visas. The family-route English requirements were not changed by this. For a partner visa, the requirement is generally A1 at the initial application, A2 at extension, and B1 at settlement. If you are applying as a partner, this work-visa change does not raise your bar at entry.

We spell this out because many people searching for “B2 English requirement” assume it applies to every visa. It does not — it is specific to the work routes listed above.

B1 vs B2: what the higher level actually means

The CEFR scale runs from A1 (basic) through to C2 (proficient). B1 is the “intermediate” level — enough to handle routine matters and familiar topics. B2 is “upper intermediate” — the ability to understand more complex text, interact with a degree of fluency, and produce clear, detailed writing on a range of subjects.

In practice, the move from B1 to B2 means some applicants who would previously have passed will now need a higher score, or a more advanced qualification, to meet the standard.

How to prove B2 English

You can generally meet the requirement in one of these ways:

  • Passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) at B2 or above with an approved provider.
  • Holding a degree that was taught in English (with the appropriate confirmation, for example via Ecctis where required).
  • Being a national of a majority English-speaking country recognised for this purpose.

The exemptions and acceptable evidence are specific, so it is worth confirming your route before booking a test.

Who is protected by transitional rules

Transitional arrangements generally protect people already in the UK who are extending under the older criteria. If you are already on one of these routes and extending, you may not be held to the new B2 standard in the same way as a brand-new applicant — but you should check your specific position, because the detail matters.

Looking ahead: B2 for settlement from March 2027

Separately, a higher English requirement is coming at the settlement stage. The March 2026 Statement of Changes confirmed that B2 will apply to several routes to Indefinite Leave to Remain from 26 March 2027. People who previously expected to settle at the B1 standard will generally need B2 from that date, unless exempt or able to apply for ILR beforehand. If settlement is on your horizon, it is sensible to plan your English testing with that date in mind.
