A Standard Visitor visa allows nationals of visa-required countries to travel to the UK for short-term purposes, including tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, and some types of study or medical treatment. It does not permit work or settlement in the UK.

At JPS Immigration Lawyers, we advise individuals and businesses on Standard Visitor visa applications, including long-term multiple-entry visas for frequent visitors.

What Is the UK Standard Visitor Visa?

The Standard Visitor visa is the main route for short-term visits to the UK by nationals who require a visa to enter. Non-visa nationals, including EU citizens, can generally visit the UK for the same purposes without applying for a visa in advance, though they may need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling. For more on this, see our UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) guide.

A Standard Visitor visa permits a stay of up to 6 months per visit. This applies whether you hold a single short-term visa or a long-term multiple-entry visa valid for 2, 5 or 10 years — the maximum stay on each individual visit remains 6 months.

Who Can Apply for a Standard Visitor Visa?

You may apply for a Standard Visitor visa if you intend to visit the UK for an approved purpose, such as:

  • tourism or leisure
  • visiting family or friends
  • attending business meetings, conferences or negotiations
  • short-term study, up to 6 months at an accredited institution
  • receiving private medical treatment
  • taking part in certain paid engagements as an expert in your field, subject to specific conditions

Standard Visitor Visa Requirements

Genuine Visitor Requirement

You must be able to show that you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit and that your visit is genuinely temporary.

Maintenance and Accommodation

You must show you can support yourself and any dependants during the visit, and that you have somewhere suitable to stay, without accessing public funds.

Purpose of Visit

You must be able to explain clearly why you are visiting and provide supporting evidence relevant to that purpose, such as an invitation letter for a business visit or evidence of a relationship for a family visit.

What You Cannot Do on a Standard Visitor Visa

  • take employment, paid or unpaid, with a UK company or individual
  • run a business or be self-employed in the UK
  • claim public funds or access NHS treatment beyond what is available to visitors
  • marry or register a civil partnership (a separate Marriage Visitor visa is required for this)
  • stay in the UK for longer than 6 months per visit, even on a long-term multi-entry visa

Long-Term Multiple-Entry Visitor Visas

Frequent visitors, such as business travellers or those with family in the UK, can apply for a visitor visa valid for 2, 5 or 10 years. These allow multiple visits during the validity period, but each individual stay is still limited to 6 months. Using frequent, successive visits to effectively live in the UK is not permitted and can lead to a visa being cancelled or a future application being refused.

Documents Required for a Standard Visitor Visa

  • valid passport or travel document
  • evidence of the purpose of your visit
  • evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay
  • evidence of your ties to your home country, such as employment or family
  • accommodation details for the duration of your visit

How to Apply for a Standard Visitor Visa

  1. Confirm the correct visa type for your purpose of travel
  2. Complete the online application
  3. Pay the application fee
  4. Book and attend a biometric appointment at a visa application centre
  5. Submit supporting documents

What Happens If a Visitor Visa Is Refused?

Visitor visa applications are commonly refused where the Home Office is not satisfied that the applicant intends to leave the UK, or where financial or accommodation evidence is unclear. A refusal does not automatically prevent a future application, but repeated refusals can make later applications, including family and work visas, more difficult.

If you are considering staying in the UK beyond a visit — for example, to join a partner — you should apply for the correct route from the outset. See our guide to the UK Spouse Visa for bringing a partner to live in the UK permanently, rather than relying on repeat visits.
