UK Spouse Visa Processing Time

UK Spouse Visa Processing Time

Processing time is one of the most important factors to understand before starting a UK Spouse Visa application. Underestimate it and you could face longer separation than expected, or miss important dates while waiting for a decision. This guide sets out the current processing times for 2026, what affects how long your application takes, and what options are available if you need a faster decision.

Standard processing time for outside-UK applications

For spouse visa applications made outside the UK — which covers most first-time applicants — the Home Office service standard is that 98.5% of applications will be decided within 12 weeks, and 100% within 24 weeks. The 12-week figure is a target, not a guarantee. Applications involving additional checks, complex circumstances, or requests for further information can take considerably longer.

It is important to understand what the processing clock actually measures. The 12-week period begins from the date you attend your biometrics appointment — not from the date you pay the fee or submit the online form. If there is a gap of several weeks between completing your application and your biometrics appointment, that wait is on top of the processing period. In practice, the total time from starting your application to receiving a decision can be four to six months or longer at busier visa application centres.

Standard processing time for inside-UK applications

For FLR(M) extension applications made from within the UK, the Home Office service standard is 8 weeks from the date of the UKVCAS biometrics appointment. This shorter timeframe reflects the fact that in-country applications are handled through a different administrative process.

If your current visa is still valid when you submit your FLR(M) application, section 3C leave automatically extends your existing permission to remain — including your right to work — while the Home Office processes the application. This protection only applies if you submitted the application before your visa expired.

Priority service for outside-UK applications

For family visa applications made outside the UK, a priority service is available at most Visa Application Centres at an additional cost of £500 per applicant. Under the priority service, the Home Office aims to decide family visa applications within 30 working days of the biometrics appointment. This is approximately six weeks and is meaningfully faster than the standard 12-week target.

The priority service is not available at every VAC location and is not guaranteed to be available at the time you apply. Check availability on the UKVI website before relying on it in your planning.

It is also important to note that the priority service is not recommended for every applicant. If your application involves a previous visa refusal, an overstay, criminal convictions, or other complex circumstances, the Home Office may remove your application from priority processing and transfer it to the standard queue. In that event the £500 priority fee is not automatically refunded — check the current UKVI policy on refunds at the time of applying.

Super-priority service — inside-UK applications only

The super-priority service, which aims to give a decision by the end of the next working day, is only available for in-country FLR(M) extension applications made through UKVCAS. It is not available for spouse visa applications made from outside the UK. The super-priority service costs an additional £1,000 per applicant.

As with the priority service, the super-priority service is not suitable for complex cases. If the Home Office determines that the application is not straightforward, it will be removed from super-priority processing without a guaranteed refund of the additional fee.

What can delay your application

Several factors commonly push processing beyond the standard timeframes. The most frequent cause is a request for further information or documents — the moment the Home Office issues such a request, the processing clock effectively pauses while you respond, potentially adding weeks to the total. Additional security or background checks triggered by certain nationalities or prior immigration history also extend processing. Incomplete or incorrectly evidenced applications are another leading cause of delay. High application volumes during peak months — typically spring and summer — increase waiting times at many VACs and UKVCAS centres.

How to give your application the best chance of timely processing

The single most effective way to avoid delays is to submit a complete, well-organised application with all required evidence from the outset. A request for further information from the caseworker is in most cases preventable with proper preparation. Beyond that: book your biometrics appointment as early as possible after completing the online form; ensure your English language test certificate is valid and will remain so until a decision is likely; and if you are applying from a country where appointment availability is limited — such as Nigeria or Pakistan — factor the biometrics wait into your overall timeline planning.

FLR(M) extension: when to apply

For FLR(M) extension applications, the safest approach is to apply at least 8 to 10 weeks before your current visa expires. You can submit your application up to 28 days before your current leave ends. Applying within this window means section 3C leave protects your right to remain and work throughout the processing period. Do not leave the application until the final days before your visa expires — if anything goes wrong with the submission, you may find yourself with no valid leave remaining.

Can I travel outside the UK while my FLR(M) application is being processed?

No. If you leave the UK while a pending FLR(M) application is in progress, your section 3C leave ends the moment you depart. You cannot re-enter the UK on section 3C leave. Do not travel outside the UK while an in-country application is pending without first taking specialist legal advice — the consequences of getting this wrong are serious.
