UK Fiancé Visa Documents Checklist 2026

A complete, category-by-category guide to the documents you must submit with a UK Fiancé Visa application — covering identity, relationship evidence, financial proof, accommodation, English language, and more. All requirements reflect Appendix FM and Appendix FM-SE as in force for 2026.

What Documents Do You Need for a UK Fiancé Visa?

When applying for a UK Fiancé Visa, you must submit supporting evidence across five main areas: identity, your genuine relationship, financial eligibility, accommodation, and English language ability. The Home Office assesses each area under the rules set out in Appendix FM and Appendix FM-SE of the UK Immigration Rules.

The documents listed below reflect current UKVI requirements. Submitting incomplete, inconsistent or incorrectly formatted evidence is the most common reason applications are refused or delayed.

1. Identity & Travel Documents

  • Valid passport (applicant) Required – Must be valid for the duration of your intended stay. Submit the full passport — not just the data page. The identity page must be clearly legible.
  • All previous passports (applicant) Required – Any passports containing previous visas, entry stamps, or immigration history. Caseworkers use these to verify your travel history and past visa compliance.
  • Passport or identity document (sponsor) Required – A clear copy of the sponsor’s current British or Irish passport. If the sponsor is settled under another status, include the relevant Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or digital EUSS status share code.
  • Two passport-sized photographs (applicant) Required – Must meet UK photo guidance: plain white or off-white background, taken within the last month, 35mm × 45mm. Submitted at the biometric appointment.
  • Biometric information Required – Fingerprints and a digital photograph captured at a Visa Application Centre. This is a mandatory step and cannot be skipped.

2. Evidence of a Genuine Relationship

This is the most scrutinised section of a Fiancé Visa application. UKVI caseworkers must be satisfied the relationship is genuine and subsisting. Evidence should span the full duration of the relationship and demonstrate regular, personal contact.

  • Personal statement about your relationship Required – A written account covering when and where you met, how the relationship developed, your contact history, visits, and your concrete plans to marry within six months of arriving in the UK.
  • Photographs together across different occasions Required – A varied selection spanning the relationship — different dates, settings, and occasions. Photographs from a single event are insufficient. Include other people where possible to demonstrate a shared social life.
  • Evidence of ongoing communication Required – Printed screenshots of messages, emails, video call logs (e.g. WhatsApp, FaceTime). Identify both parties clearly and include dates. Communications should show regular, personal contact over time.
  • Evidence of visits to each other Required – Flight bookings, boarding passes, hotel receipts, or booking confirmations demonstrating in-person meetings. UKVI expects couples to have met in person before the application is made.
  • Evidence of intention to marry within 6 months Required – A registry office booking or wedding venue confirmation is strongest. If no booking exists yet, a detailed written plan with a target date and clear practical steps is required.
  • Decree absolute or dissolution certificate If previously married – Required from both the applicant and the sponsor if either has been divorced. Must be an original or certified copy. A certified English translation is required if not in English.
  • Death certificate of former spouse If applicable – Required if either party was widowed. A certified translation is required if not in English.

3. Financial Evidence

All financial evidence must follow the strict rules in Appendix FM-SE. The specific documents required depend on the income source being used. See our full guide to UK Fiancé Visa financial requirements 2026 for detailed guidance on how the £29,000 threshold works.

  • 6 months of payslips (employed sponsor) Required – Payslips for the six months immediately before the application. Must show employer name, gross and net pay, and payment date. Online payslips must be from employer-headed paper or accompanied by an employer letter.
  • 6 months of personal bank statements (employed sponsor) Required – Statements showing salary credits that correspond exactly to the payslips submitted. Online statements must be bank-stamped or accompanied by a verification letter from the bank.
  • Employer letter confirming employment Required – On headed paper, signed by HR or a senior manager. Must confirm job title, start date, employment type (permanent or fixed-term), and gross annual or monthly salary.
  • HMRC tax year overview and SA302 (self-employed) If self-employed – Both documents for the most recent full tax year. Obtained directly from HMRC or through commercial self-assessment software. Must correspond to the income being claimed.
  • 6 months of business bank statements (self-employed) If self-employed – Statements showing business income and outgoings for the period covered by the tax calculation. Must correspond to the HMRC figures declared.
  • 6 months of savings statements (if using savings) If using savings – Bank statements covering the six months immediately before the application date. Must show the savings were held continuously for the full period. Statements from multiple accounts may be combined.

Critical: evidence must be consistent – Discrepancies between payslips, employer letters and bank statements — even minor ones — are frequently cited in refusal decisions. Cross-check all figures before submitting. A salary shown on a payslip must appear as a bank credit within a few days of the pay date stated.

4. Accommodation Evidence

You must demonstrate that the accommodation in the UK is suitable and will not be overcrowded once the applicant joins the sponsor. The Home Office applies Housing Act 1985 overcrowding standards.

  • Tenancy agreement (if renting) Required – A signed tenancy agreement naming the sponsor. Must show the property address, number of rooms and remaining tenancy duration. If the property is shared, confirm the number of current occupants.
  • Land Registry or mortgage statement (if owner-occupier) Required – A Land Registry title register or recent mortgage statement showing the sponsor’s name and property address. A solicitor’s letter confirming ownership is also acceptable.
  • Property Inspection Report If required – A professional inspection report may be needed where overcrowding is a risk. JPS Immigration provides free Property Inspection Reports with qualifying visa applications. See our Property Reports service.
  • Landlord or homeowner letter If living with family – A signed letter from the homeowner confirming consent for the applicant to reside at the address, the number of bedrooms, and the current occupants.

5. English Language Evidence

Fiancé Visa applicants must demonstrate English language ability at a minimum of A1 level (CEFR) in speaking and listening. The requirement applies to the applicant, not the sponsor.

  • Approved English language test certificate (CEFR A1) Required – A certificate from an approved Secure English Language Testing (SELT) provider. The test must be taken at an approved centre. Trinity College London SELT and IELTS Life Skills are among the most commonly used providers. Check the GOV.UK approved provider list before booking.
  • Degree certificate taught in English Alternative route – A degree or postgraduate qualification taught and assessed in English. Must include written confirmation from the awarding institution of the language of instruction, or an Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) verification for overseas qualifications.
  • Nationality exemption — no test required If from exempt country – Nationals of the following countries are exempt: Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, and the USA.

6. Other Documents

  • Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate If required by country – Required if you are a national of, or have lived continuously for 6 months or more in, one of the listed TB countries. Must be from an approved clinic and no more than 6 months old at the time of application. A current list of TB countries is published on GOV.UK.
  • Details of previous immigration applications If applicable – If you have previously applied for a UK visa or any immigration status in any country — including refused applications — you must include full details. Omitting previous refusals is treated as misrepresentation.
  • Criminal convictions disclosure If applicable – Disclose any spent or unspent criminal convictions anywhere in the world. Non-disclosure is treated as deception and will result in refusal. The Home Office conducts background checks.

Certified Translations

Any document not in English or Welsh must be accompanied by a certified translation. The translation must include the full text of the original, confirm it is an accurate translation, state the date of translation, and include the full name and contact details of the translator or translation company confirming their competence in the relevant language. Machine translations are not accepted. The original document must be included alongside the translation.
