But an Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) can request an interview — in person or by phone — at any stage, particularly where the written evidence leaves questions unanswered, where a previous application was refused, or where the relationship history is more complex than average. Being asked to attend one is not, by itself, a sign your application is in trouble — but it does mean the outcome now depends partly on how the interview goes, not just on your paperwork.

Why Interviews Happen
An interview lets the ECO test whether the written application — your relationship history, your wedding plans, your knowledge of your partner — holds up under direct questioning. It exists because the genuine relationship requirement is, by its nature, difficult to establish from documents alone. Interviews are more likely where:
- the relationship developed quickly, or mostly online, before you met in person
- there’s limited documentary evidence of time spent together
- either partner has a previous marriage, relationship, or immigration history that needs explaining
- a previous visa application involving either partner was refused
- the written application contains inconsistencies the ECO wants clarified
Not every one of these factors leads to an interview, and plenty of applications with one or more of these features are approved without ever reaching that stage.
What’s Typically Covered
Based on the areas the genuine relationship and financial requirements actually test, interview questions tend to cluster around:
- How the relationship began and developed — where and when you met, how the relationship progressed, and whether your account matches your partner’s and the written application
- Your wedding plans — venue, date, guests, and how realistic these plans are within the fiancé visa’s 6-month window
- Your life together after marriage — where you’ll live, and your understanding of your partner’s circumstances (work, family, home)
- Your partner’s background — details a genuinely engaged couple would reasonably know about each other’s family, work, and daily life
- Any previous relationships or marriages — for either partner, including how and when they ended
There is no fixed script, and the depth of questioning generally reflects what the ECO felt was unclear from the paperwork rather than a standard checklist applied to everyone.

Does being asked to attend an interview mean my application will be refused?
No. An interview means the ECO wants more information before deciding — it’s an additional step in the assessment, not a decision in itself.
Will my partner also be interviewed?
Depending on the case, either or both partners may be asked questions, and in some cases partners are interviewed separately so their answers can be compared for consistency.
Is the interview in person or by phone?
Both formats are used depending on location and circumstances; you’ll be told the format when the interview is arranged.
What if our accounts of how we met don’t match exactly on minor details?
Minor, natural inconsistencies (different recollections of an exact date, for example) are generally treated differently from inconsistencies that suggest the relationship history itself isn’t genuine. The overall picture matters more than any single detail.
Can I bring someone with me to an in-person interview?
Requirements vary by visa application centre and interview type; check the specific instructions provided with your interview invitation, and speak to your adviser in advance if you’re unsure.
How long before the interview should I start preparing?
As soon as you’re notified. Preparation is most useful when there’s time to review your evidence properly and align both partners’ accounts, rather than in the day or two before the interview itself.
